IGNOU BLIS Programme (Bachelor of Library and Information Science)
The Indira Gandhi National Open University has introduced the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Library and Information Science (BLIS) under the School of Social Sciences in the year 1989. The need has been felt to introduce Library Science course in IGNOU to meet the huge demand for trained professionals in the field of library and information activities.
Earlier there were very few universities which had been offering degree courses in library science via distance as well as regular mode. But the demand for trained human resource to occupy various positions in libraries, documentation centres and information centres/institutions in the country at various levels were continuously increasing.
So, the Ignou launched the Bachelor of Science in Library Science (BLIS) programme to offer education to the interested learners to meet the demand.
At present, the things have been changed a lot in managing the libraries and information centre because of an introduction of new communication technologies. So, the university has also revised the IGNOU BLIS Programme courses and their syllabus in the year to meet the new challenges and requirements.
After studying this course, the BLIS professionals still have to update themselves from time to time to serve their users in this changing scenario. If you possess the Bachelor Degree in Library and Information Science, you may apply for admission to Ignou Master Degree Programme in Library and Information Science (MLIS).
